Geetha Lakshmi
Present - After Geetha

INDIA - Education/ Rural Development : It's been about a month now since we lost Geetha. We were able to start a Eucational Trust in India for developing rural schools and continuing the work that Geetha was doing and loved so much. Still rememeber her first job as a teacher in a neighboring school before her marraige. She used to commute everyday picking up kids walking to the school 2 miles away and dropping them back after classes. Donating all her salary for uniforms and notebooks for the poor kids every month. Buying equipments like a computer and printer etc. for the village school and then running aroound to form a alumni list and collecting donations from each to fund the school expenses with my Dad. Writing appeals and letters to officials and public to get the school more clasess and teachers. The school in Arangal Durugam now has got 100% results for the last three years in a row and stood first in the district. Students from the neighboring city Ambur now travel to this remote village due to its quality education. It now has a classes upto X grade from the 6th grade that it used to have before all this started.

Now 'Geethalakshmi Educational Trust' will continue the work and try to fulfill her dreams of seeing a English medium school for this remote village. We are trying to bring about a Primary Healthcare Center and a library within the next year to serve the 15 villages in this panchayat.

Fight against Cancer :  Geetha was devastated when she knew she had cancer. Shortly after the initial shock her strength and determination made her to know and learn more about the disease and she educated herself through various books and publications that I was able to get to her with the help of the Lymphoma Leukemia society here in Charlotte, USA. She used to spend much of her energetic times in between the chemo therapies talking to other patients in the ward and educating them about their ailments and treatment options. Dad too followed up suit and when i visited the hospital to collect her death certificate the patients in the ward surrounded me with their questions , fears and concerns. The hospital councelor who is there to assist the patients is overwhelmed too with the number of patients and used to look forward to books sent from here for assisting other patients.

I met Doctor Mammen Chandy HOD Haematology who expressed cancer awareness as the first need for all his patients. The few doctors in the hospital were always overwhelmed by the number of patients they had to serve and found it hard to give individual attention and explanations and education about the disease to all the patients. CMC is about to start doing MUD transplants and cord blood transplants and I was given some names who are working to establish a Donor registry in India.

We plan to start a cancer awareness and education program with websites and publications to aid patients in local languages for helping out in this area. I am in touch with the doctors there to find out how we can help in setting up this registry. Meanwhile the website has already generated numerous calls for information and help from other patients whom we are trying to assist.

USA: We have been talking to IRS and many organizations like IRDF, Sahayta, NMDP and other families ( Kumar & Sangeeta, team www.helpVinay.org ) who were effected by cancer now to try and form a charity organization which will work for cancer awareness , education and support for the community and create a network of angels in every city who will not fail another situation like this. A network that will save critical time in raising help for anyone effected by this deadly disease.

I will be updating the website with progress on these fronts and providing more information here for other patients too. Keep watching for more updates.

Experiences

500,000 - 750,000 was the target amount needed to save Geetha initially, until we found about the option of treatment in Israel. Still remember Geetha breaking down and losing hope when she heard the estimates of  Rs.2-3 crores. Then gaining faith and hope again in me & her family being able to do something for her.

After going through the logistics the target was determined  to find and gain some help from atleast 10,000 people. To find these 10,000 we had to reach and make at least 20,000 people aware about our situation. We were hoping of raising at least the initial deposit amounts for acceptance into a hospital and the remaining money from charity organizations once she was in the hospital.

1000 angels in each city. 10 Cities would have done the work. But inspite of the huge effort undertaken we could find only under 600 donors for this effort in the USA.

Appeals were sent out initially with the only motive to make as many people aware of Geetha's situation as possible. Appeals were made to relegious centers to pray for Geetha's health and to a request to their members to see the website and see if they could help. Appeals to various Human Resource ofices of corporations , businesses and employers around the world. Appeals to charitable organizations.. appeals to every person we could reach and posters and brochures in stores and public places and media and publications that we could reach.

We had experiences varying from inspiring and encouraging to demoralizing and dissapointing in this effort.

Many had spent days and hours sending out emails and then following up with phone calls and personal requests and yet there were many who just deleted the mail and ignored the whole episode.

From organizations that refused to even help create a awareness to its memebers through prayer meetings/ internal mails to organizations and companies that cirulated the email via official channels and their charity set ups.

From friends and Collegues who donated big amounts inspite of having financial difficulties and medical emergencies in their own family to those who refused to even acknowledge the appeal.

From a 5th grade student who knocked on every door in his apartment complex and collected Rs.700 to people who expressed frustrations in their attempt to seek help and gave up on day one.

We now are working on this search for finding these angels in every city who can rise to the occasion for helping another fellow human. An attempt is being made by the save Geetha team towards this goal so no one has to undergo this pain, for trying to save a life again.

"Save Geetha Donations"

We were  able to set up a funds for Geetha in Both US and India.
CPAA had been kind enough to help us out in India and we could manage to set up a non profit fund in USA.

Many of our friends had formed small vounteer teams across US and India to help raise the funds for Geetha and also to initiate and help in the marrow donor drives.

Even though we could not save Geetha, your support was something that gave us and Geetha hope during her treatment. We hoped that she would survive the chemo and reach the transplant center by August 07.

But in spite of our efforts after bringing together this team and generating awareness and prayers in a 1000 hearts she left us alone to continue the effort that we undertook for her, against cancer.

Thank you for your generous help.
